DIREKT is to co-host an international conference in Fiji in December this year by organising a special session of its own.

The International Conference on Renewable Energy and Climate Change (Focus on the Pacific), was originally to be organised by the University of the South Pacific (USP), the Fiji Department of Energy and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) in Suva, Fiji. This team of hosts will now be joined by DIREKT. The decision was made early last month when it was realised that this conference on renewable energy planned for USP in December had much in common with the aims and goals of the DIREKT project.

It is expected that the DIREKT partners will contribute to a special session on Enhancing Renewable Energy Research and Technology Transfer to the ACP countries, and the Pacific region in particular. The convenor of the conference, DIREKT Project Supervisor Dr. Anirudh Singh, said that the presence of DIREKT partners at the conference will in itself create a rare opportunity for interaction and networking between renewable energy experts from the ACP and the European Union. This will make a definite contribution towards strengthening the internal science and technology capacity of the Pacific Small Developing Islands.

The conference will take place between the 6th and 8th of December this year. This will be followed immediately afterwards by a 3-day DIREKT meeting – the third of its kind.
