Online resource for renewable energy education and training

The International Renewable Energy Agency has produced the IRELP portal, a free online resource for renewable energy education and training.
IRELP aims to combat limited opportunities for education and training in this area by raising awareness of the availability of such opportunities and making them more accessible in turn. In addition to offering a range of education and training opportunities, IRELP provides a library of renewable energy training materials, a database of webinars, a platform of electronically supported learning for students and a forum designed to facilitate collaboration between educational institutions.

Sustainable Energy for AllSustainable energy – energy that is accessible, cleaner and more efficient – powers opportunity. It grows economies. It lights up homes, schools and hospitals. It empowers women and local communities. And it paves a path out of poverty to greater prosperity for all. But nearly one in five people around the world do not have access to modern energy services. Twice that number, three billion people, rely on wood, coal, charcoal or animal waste for cooking and heating. In today's economy, this is inequitable – a major barrier to eradicating poverty. The energy future we need is one in which everyone has access to modern energy services, where energy resources are used more efficiently, and where countries increasingly invest in renewable sources.

6th DIREKT project meeting in Mauritius

The sixth project meeting was held in Mauritius from 23 - 26 June 2012 at Le Meridien Hotel, Pointe aux Piments, Mauritius. The main topics discussed were the activities and the progress of work package 4 (Capacity Building Programme for Renewable Energy), work package 5 (Evaluation and Recommendation) as well as work package 3 (Research and Technology Transfer Centres) and work package 6 (Dissemination and Networking).

Two-day renewable energy workshop in Trinidad

DIREKT partners in Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados collaborated to run a two-day workshop on renewable energy with emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) and fuel cell technologies in Trinidad from 24 - 25 May 2012. The main objective of the workshop was to provide hands-on training in selected renewable energy technologies to stakeholders inTrinidad and Tobago and the wider Caribbean.

UWI Cave Hill Campus out front with Renewable Energy

A science and technology revolution is in store for Cave Hill, which is designed to transform the campus environment into a Renewable Energy Technology Demonstration Centre. The aim is to illustrate solar, wind and other renewable energy sources in action by highlighting practical applications of renewable energy technologies while continuing to promote public awareness and educate local communities on these technologies and energy-efficiency measures.

Tonga workshop a catalyst for national action in renewable energyA workshop organized by Project DIREKT and USP Tonga last week (11th to 12th April) captured national headlines, and was received with rapturous enthusiasm by all sectors of the Tongan community. The workshop, which was opened by Tonga's Prime Minister, Honorable Lord Tu'ivakano, was televised live to the nation. This was followed by an extensive coverage in the evening news.

Three-day regional work- shop on ‘Renewable Energy Technologies’ in Jamaica

DIREKT partners in Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago collaborated to run a three-day regional workshop on renewable energy technologies, with an emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy technologies from 2 - 4 April 2012 in Jamaica. The workshop was held at the Hugh Lawson Shearer Trade Union Education Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica.

2012 workshop on the economics application and legislation relating to renewable energyFEA is willing to buy electricity from grid-connected systems through net-metering, and has the legislations in place to do so, a workshop held at USP last Friday (16 March) revealed.

The Project DIREKT-organized workshop on the economics, application and legislation relating to renewable energy was attended by 55 participants from four government departments, three regional agencies, the private sector and members of the public. Speakers came from the USP, SPC, the Pacific Power Association (PPA), the UNDP and FEA.

Global Network trains local researchers

A group of local researchers and renewable energy stakeholders were given a thorough grounding in the basics of applying for funding for renewable energy projects in the region at a workshop held at USP on Thursday. The Project DIREKT-organised workshop attracted some 40 participants from the local universities, government departments, NGOs and the banking sector.

Seminar: “Renewable Energy: Technological Approaches and Solutions for Developing Countries”

Organisators and contibutors of the seminar “Renewable energy” in Hamburg, Germany agreed: it was a total success.The seminar “Renewable energy: Technological Approaches and Solutions for Developing Countries” took place in Hamburg on 16th June this year. It was a total success.

80 participants attended to discuss with the presenters renewable energy approaches and solutions for developing countries. Topics were covered such as the wind power project in Morocco, renewable energy for small island states using the example of the Seychelles, and biofuels for developing countries: “The Pilot Project DIREKT”.

4th DIREKT Project Meeting in Mauritius

Participants of the fourth DIREKT meeting in Mauritius at the Belle Vue Thermal Power PlantAfter three successful project meetings, the fourth project meeting took place this year in Mauritius from 12th to 16th April at the University of Mauritius. All partners were present to discuss the work packages, results of activities as well as forthcoming steps like organizing the next project meeting, the conference 2012 and further activities which have to be fulfi  lled in order to adhere to the time schedule.
