6 - 8 December 2010, USP, Suva, Fiji First Circular

Introduction
Pacific countries face many challenges that are common to them all. They have no fossil fuel reserves of their own, and their remoteness means they have to import fuel from far away at exorbitant costs to their economies. Their low-lying islands with large coastal regions are subject to the worst negative impacts of climate change – extreme weather events, sea level rise, storm surges and ground water pollution to name a few.
These problems are not unknown to the developed nations, whose extravagant use of fossil fuel is in part to blame for the global warming that is the cause of climate change. But these nations only have second-hand knowledge of the full impacts of climate change on the PICs and the true economic austerities these island nations face.
The International Conference on Renewable Energy and Climate Change (ICRECC10) will, for the first time, provide a common venue where the peoples of the Pacific will sit down together and device their own strategies for solving their common problems. ICRECC10 will necessarily be multi-disciplinary in nature. It will cover topics ranging from renewable energy resources, to technologies and their relevance to the development of the region and cross-cutting socio-economic and policy issues. It will also include a comprehensive discussion of the impact of climate change as experienced by the people of the Pacific nations themselves.
Theme and scope This will be a multi-disciplinary conference covering all aspects of renewable energy and climate change as they impact on the lives of the Pacific people. Topics covered will include (but not be restricted to):
- Renewable energy resource assessment
- Renewable energy technology and application
- Renewable energy and energy efficiency
- Renewable energy economics
- Policy, strategy and frameworks
- Socio-economics, technology transfer and capacity building
- Environment and sustainability
- Climate change: mitigation, vulnerability and adaptation
- Carbon trading
Related Conference The ICRECC10 will take place immediately after a related conference being organized at USP during 29 Nov - 3 Dec 2010. Further information on this earlier conference is available at www.usp.ac.fj/conference
